Zuma ($20)

Like all Popcap games, Zuma is free to play online (how do you like them apples?), and you can also download a free ad-supported version with lots of levels. To get the full version, you pay twenty bucks, but since you'll be doing nothing but playing Zuma every free second (and many seconds when you should be doing other things, too), it'll be well worth it. There's something so satisfying about shooting those ceramic balls out of a frog. Please don't tell me what that means psychoanalytically. From Popcap Games.

Free Public-Domain Audiobooks

If you're an audiobook fanatic, I don't have to tell you how useful they are. They can lull you to sleep, distract you pleasantly while you work out, and keep you from losing your mind on long car and plane trips. They are, though, expensive to download—but it turns out that's not true for the zillions of books in the public domain.

In the best spirit of the internet (that is, for free, and through volunteer labor), Librivox serves as a kind of audio Project Gutenberg, serving up a catalog of high-quality readings of work from Jane Austen, Mark Twain, O. Henry, PG Wodehouse, and so on. There's often a choice of more than one version, so you can even pick a reader whose voice and accent you like.

To browse the catalog or search for your favorite titles, go here.

Today Only: Free Tivo at Woot (Free)

Woot is (for beginners) one of those websites where you can buy something extremely cheaply, but each item is only on offer for one day, and only until they run out. Today's deal is an 80-hour Series 2 Tivo for (pay attention) $129, with a $170 rebate. That's right. You get $35 for buying the Tivo, and the Tivo itself is free. To get the rebate, you have to sign up for a year's worth of Tivo service (this costs about $15 a month), which you were already going to do, because Tivo service is what allows Tivo to automatically record your shows. Listen to me carefully: if you've ever wanted a Tivo, go buy this now. It is the best deal you're ever going to get on one.

Every now and then, something free just drops in our laps. Like these adorable flash games from Orisinal. Try the bells game first -- it's my favorite.
